Positive Mental Health Through Creative Arts for BIPOC Youth


Aim
The youth creative arts camp for positive mental health aims to create a safe and inclusive healing space for young people to reflect, connect and act on their mental health challenges through creative arts.
Objectives
1. To create hybrid (physical & virtual ) space for young people to express their mental health challenges through creative arts
2. To sensitize youth, families, and communities on positive mental health and opportunities for collective healing through arts
3. To publish and disseminate youth creative expressions to build a community movement for positive mental health.


Activities
The camp designed in a hybrid model to create a wider opportunity for youth to participate safely in the program. The program designed as five days for in-persons sessions and five modules for online sessions with pre-post assessments. The program will be implemented in the following process. .

Day & Module -1
Introduction to art as therapy and connecting to our modern world
Youth will learn why and how art therapy is used. We will discuss the benefits as well as the historical connections to art-making. Youth will learn how to use lines, shapes, colors, and other elements of art to represent feelings and concepts. A search for peace and connection to our modern world. This lesson will discuss today’s struggles with the pandemic, social media, and unrealistic ideals. Recognizing and understanding where our stress comes from is key to making positive changes. Journaling about these stressors can bring about positive paths from harmful behavior in some patterns. The segment will use the art for relaxation purposes.

Day & Module - 2
Art for anxiety and watercolor
This segment will discuss mental and physical anxiety struggles and how they may manifest differently in different people. We will look at examples of how art may be used to articulate these feelings and process them. Youth will learn a variety of watercolor techniques. They will then use their skill base to respond to a prompt.

Day & Module - 3
Art for depression and mixed media art
Art is used as a means of self-expression in times when there are no words. This segment will discuss the use of art-making to express feelings of depression and other concepts that are difficult to express.

Day & Module -4
Mixed media narrative and evoking joy by viewing and analyzing art
Youth will view, analyze, and discuss various pieces of art throughout history. We will bring in historical connections of how art has been used to evoke joy throughout time. Youth will use a variety of materials to create a narrative. Students will express and communicate intangible feelings

Day & Module - 5
Self-evaluation and portrait
Youth describe their growth through the experience and complete a self-portrait. Positive mental health visualization in different creative arts expression

Publication
At the end of camp, All the participants’ creative expressions will be collected and compiled as a book and the same will be shared with the participants in the month of September 2021.

Facilitator
Ms. Mallory Scoppa Gardner, Certified Arts Educator will facilitate workshops for youth in person and create online learning modules for the virtual participants.

Timeline & Venue
The online program will be available on the TYCL International website from June 1st to 20th, 2021 for youth to learn creative arts and submit their artwork for publication. The in-person camp will be held from June 14-18, 2021 from 10 AM to 12 Noon at the Pajama Factory, Williamsport, PA.
